Mattresses and body positions for those who suffer from back pain

The mattress of the bed plays the most important role in the quality of sleeping because it helps a lot in a resting night sleep and in a fresh awakening. The wrong mattress itself is enough for lack of sleeping, malaise and might strengthens the pains of those suffering from back pain.

The reasons of back pain can be many and to relief different problems a unique type bed, mattress and sleeping body position is needed.
There are only a few researches done about the relation of pack pain and mattresses so the results of them are not so convincing.

One thing is sure: the reasons of back pains are extremely complex therefore it is hard to say that a given person's mattress had a significant role in the formation and the increase of the pain.

Some considerable advise might be helpful if one suffers from one of the above problems:

The muscles, the ligaments and few parts of the spine can be rested and fully relaxed only during sleeping. For this reason it is very important for those who suffer from back pain - and the comfortable body position helps a great deal to heal during sleeping - which is possible only by using a comfortable mattress.

Let' see a few positions which are helping the spine to rest during sleeping:

  • Usually the most comfortable is to sleep on our back while there are pillows under our popliteals. This completely relieves the spine and helps its lower part to have its natural shape.
  • Those who like to sleep on their sides should put a smaller pillow between their knees since this way their waist and lower back are relieved.
  • Those who like to sleep on their stomach are recommended to place a flat soft pillow around their waist and lower abdomen so that their body position would be less twisted – this way the spine is not so loaded.

 

 

Choosing mattresses for those who suffering from back pain


In this case the most important aspect is the type of the sickness causing the pain. This can be:

 

  • Osteoarthritis: those who suffer of this have spine problems. The embryo position is recommended for them because of the bent knees. If you have this kind of problems use a chair with adjustable back and footrest for resting – this way you can reduce the load on your spine.
  • Spinal disc diseases: In case of any kind of illness of the discs among the vertebra the laying on the stomach position should be used along with the earlier mentioned flat and soft pillow under their waist.

It is true in general that supporting the knees by a pillow helps to relief the pain in the area of the back, in many cases it is recommended for the patients after spinal operations.
In the adjustable chairs with back- and footrest a position can be set easier which is comfortable for those who suffering from back pain. It is true specially in those cases when the pain is increasing during standing or during taking an upright position and decreasing in bent body positions.

Other influencing factors of right sleeping

Naturally not only the mattresses can solve the problems of different pains and sleeping disorders therefore other factors must be considered for a good night sleep:

  • side effects of medicines
  • irregular sleeping
  • caffeine, alcohol and smoking
  • sleeping apnoea (a kind of sleeping disorder)
  • nervousness, stress
